The short film festival will take place at the Studio des Ursulines from November 23 to 28. It will welcome several guests for special screenings as well as the filmmakers of the competition to present their films.
For the third year in a row, the Format Court festival, organized by the association of the same name which in 2009 created a magazine dedicated to short film cinema, offers to discover the news of short films through a competition of 24 films. as well as several side events, all screened at Le Studio des Ursulines cinema, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, from November 23 to 28.
On the program, therefore, twenty fiction films, documentaries, as well as experimental and animated films. Naïla Guiguet will present Dustin, Grand Prix at Côté Court this year, Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis will present his animated documentary Maalbeek, accompanied by its editor, while the public will be able to discover Gabrielle Stremmer’s film made exclusively from images gleaned from YouTube, entitled Clean With Me (After Dark), which caused a sensation in Clermont-Ferrand in 2020.

A particularly rich creation to promote
Contemporary creation in the field of short films likes the fusion, the meeting between different forms and sources of images, either to draw up an exploded report of our current lives, or to seek to move away from the flat factual and dive into the imaginary. .
On the sidelines of this competition, we will also be able to take advantage of a focus devoted to the actor Swann Arlaud, winner of two César in 2018 and 2020: the actor has filmed in Big sorrow by Céline Devaux in 2017, a film that went through the Venice Film Festival. The Short Film Agency will also have the opportunity to offer a selection from its catalog: we are thinking in particular of Janine by Maurice Pialat, 1962 film, as well as A story of water, a pre-Nouvelle Vague short film by Truffaut and Godard, who co-directed a sweet fable around the 1959 floods. A focus on the Swedish short film will be an opportunity to discover in particular Incident by a Bank by Ruben Östlund (2010), who in 2017 won the Palme d’Or for The Square.
The festival will therefore be an opportunity to recall that the short film is a form that remains lively and inventive, and that these places of meetings and screenings remain among the only supports of this fragile and marginal economy. The preselections for the Cesar short films of fiction, animation and documentary also prove to us that the cinema institution increasingly welcomes these proposals, which beyond being the antechamber of the great filmmakers of tomorrow, are real places of exploration and aesthetic, dramatic and political creation.
