Sophie Marceau’s big comeback
It has been a long time since the Cannes Film Festival hosted so many French films in competition.
The 74th edition of the festival will open on July 6 with the world premiere ofAnnette of Leos Carax. The film by the French director is a musical drama is in the English language, with the stars Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver, the story of a couple whose life is forever changed by the birth of their first child. The Sparks (aka Ron and Russell Mael) co-wrote the screenplay forAnnette with Carax and composed the soundtrack of the film.
Six years after having walked the red carpet as a member of the jury chaired by Ethan and Joel Coen, Sophie Marceau returns to the Croisette in competition for Everything went well of Francois Ozon.
After Serious, his first shocking film, a cannibalistic story discovered at Critics’ Week, Julia ducournau competes with Titanium. Vincent lindon is featured in this movie. The actor received the 2015 Cannes Film Festival’s male actor award for The law of the market by French Stéphane Brizé.
Two other French directors are in competition: Catherine corsini with Fractures, drama against a backdrop of social anger with Marina Foïs, Pio Marmaï and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi; Mia Hansen-Løve with Bergman Island, the story of a couple of filmmakers who settled down to write for a summer on the Swedish island of Fårö, where Bergman lived. Accustomed to the Cannes competition and awards (Grand Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999, doubled for male interpretation for Emmanuel Schotte and female for Séverine Caneele for the film Humanity), the Northerner Bruno Dumont will defend France, portrait of our country through the prism of television and the media. At the casting: Léa Seydoux, Blanche Gardin, Benjamin Biolay.
Six years after his Palme d’Or for his film Dheepan, Jacques Audiard will try the double with The Olympics, immersed in the thirteenth arrondissement of Paris, according to three new graphics by the American author Adrian Tomine.

In a special screening, Charlotte Gainsbourg will present Jane by Charlotte, her first film, a documentary about her mother. “An artist speaks of another artist”, declared the General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux.
French films whose theatrical release has been postponed by the pandemic will be entitled to their Cannes screening in gala dress: Aline of Valérie Lemercier; North Bac of Cedric Jimenez.
Nanni Moretti and Sean Penn
Among the most anticipated directors in competition are the Italian Nanni Moretti, winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival for The son’s room, the American Sean Penn, the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov or even the Taiwanese Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Palme d’Or in 2010 for Uncle boonmee.
Dutch Paul Verhoeven also attracts attention with his film in French, Benedetta, featuring a lesbian nun played by Belgian actress Virginie efira. Other Belgian, Joachim Lafosse, in competition with The Unquiet, drama on bipolarity with French actors Leïla Bekhti and Damien Bonnard.
Spike lee chairs the jury that will award the Palme d’Or and other official festival prizes on July 17. The Oscar-winning filmmaker was to be president of the jury for the 2020 festival, put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Jodie foster will attend the opening ceremony on July 6 and receive a Palme d’Or for all of his achievements. The two-time Oscar winner made her Cannes debut in 1976 with Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese, crowned with the Palme d’Or: she was then 13 years old.
