The film revolves around three families installed in an opulent building in Rome, and confronted with deep intimate upheavals placing their existence in suspense: a couple of judges whose son mowed down an innocent one drunken evening; young woman fearing to reproduce her mother’s mental disorders; father whose fear that something might happen to his little girl turns into an obsession, plunging him into the greatest confusion. The opportunity for Nanni Moretti to question himself on the human condition, a reflection that he occasionally combines with disillusioned observations. So when the overwhelming Margherita Buy, passed from Mia Madre to his magistrate wife on the screen, strikes her with a “we have failed” to which we would be inclined to find a generational scope. “I would avoid generalizing, because that would have something self-fulfilling, he observes, however.
