MTV Video Music Awards: a different ceremony marked by Covid

A long list of the most prominent figures in music, such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Maluma or The Weeknd, will participate this Sunday in the ceremony of the Video Music Awards (VMA) of the MTV network, in a ceremony different from the previous years due to the pandemic and that will be held with several open-air concerts in various parts of New York.

In the 2020 edition, whose ceremony begins at 8:00 p.m. local time (00:00 GMT on Monday), Gaga and Grande lead the nominations for this edition, with nine nominations each, including their joint hit “Rain On Me” that could rise as video and song of the year.

Behind them are Billie Eilish and The Weeknd, with six nominations each, and Taylor Swift, with five mentions, as their acclaimed latest work, “Folklore,” was released after the deadline.

Among Latinos, J Balvin is nominated in four categories, three for Best Latino Video and one for his collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas on “Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life).”

➡️ Daisy Dove is born, the baby of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

By category, the candidates for the best video clip of the year are, in addition to “Rain On Me”, “Everything I Wanted” by Billie Eilish, “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, “The Man” by Taylor Swift, “Life Is Good” by Future ft. Drake and “Godzilla” by Eminem ft. Juice WRLD.

For their part, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone, Da Baby and The Weeknd will compete to be named artist of the year.

In the category of best Latin video, J Balvin starts as a favorite with three mentions: One for his song “Amarillo” and another two for collaborating with Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna and Karol G in “China” on the one hand, and for the other with Maluma in “Qué Pena”.

“Tusa” by Karol G and Nicki Mianj, “Yo Perreo Sola” by Bad Bunny and “Mamacita” by Black Eyed Peas ft. Ozuna & J. Rey Soul complete the section.

The Spanish Rosalía, who last year won best Latin choreography and video for “Con Altura”, this year received a nomination in the technical categories for the edition of “A Palé”.

➡️ Bunbury guilty of plagiarizing at least 37 songs from his repertoire?

As a novelty, in this edition two categories designed specifically for the coronavirus pandemic have been added: Best music video from home and quarantined performance.

Although MTV had originally announced that the event would take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn without the attendance of the public, on August 7 a change of plans was announced, so the concerts of the event will be outdoors and will take place at various points in the 5 boroughs that make up New York with few or no attendants.

Among the planned performances, the K-Pop group BTS stands out, making their debut on the VMA stage, and presenting their new single “Dynamite” for the first time on television; Miley Cyrus, who just released her song “Midnight Sky”; and Lady Gaga, who has performed at the event for the first time since 2013, will join Grande in singing “Rain on Me.”

Also performing will be Doja Cat, The Weeknd, Maluma, DaBaby, and the Latin band CNCO, as well as the Black Eyed Peas.

J Balvin and Roddy Rich were scheduled to perform, but both recently announced they were withdrawing from the event, citing the latest “compliance issues.”
