Last night the MTV Video Music Awards, an event that takes place annually but this time had the particularity that there was no audience – it was all virtual – and appearances were considerably reduced due to the pandemic, with few artists on stage and some remote performances.

The show was hosted by Keke palmer, who opened the award ceremony with a message for the late actor Chadwick boseman and spoke of the particular situation that the world is going through due to the covid-19 pandemic. Then, and in a more encouraging tone, it was time for the music and the awards.

Lady Gaga was one of the big winners of the night. The singer won several awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for the song “Rain on me”, Which is part of his album Chromatic and carried out in collaboration with Ariana Grande. In fact, they both sang it on stage surrounded by dancers and high-tech masks.

Gaga also received the Tricon Award for being a multidimensional artist involved in music, acting and philanthropy. After taking this honor, the singer recalled the times that as a young woman she failed both in music and in acting and dedicated the award to all those who were at home, advising that they take care of themselves and use the mask.

Another of the big winners was The Weeknd, who took the statuette to Video of the year by “Blinding Lights”. In that category he competed against Taylor Swift, the aforementioned Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, Eminem ft. Juice WRLD, Future ft. Drake and Billie Eilish. The Canadian, who also won the statuette for Best R&B Video, took advantage of his moment on stage to demand justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.

K-pop band Bts won several awards, including Best Group, Best K-Pop and Best Pop Video, while Taylor Swift won Best Direction for the video of “The Man”–The theme of his album Lover– and became the first female artist to win that recognition. In a message sent from her home, Swift said she is very grateful to her team for trusting her in such a challenge.

Other winners of the night were Doja cat (Best New Artist), Coldplay (Best Rock Video for “Orphans”), Maluma ft. J Balvin (Best Latin Video for “Qué Pena), Machine Gun Kelly (Best Alternative Video for “Bloody Valentine”), Megan Thee Stallion (Best Hip Hop Video for “Savage”) and HER (Solidarity Video for “I Can’t Breathe”, made in support of the Black Lives Matter movement).
