Nominees reject J Balvin’s proposal to boycott the 2021 Latin Grammys

After Residente raised his voice, Gepe and Álex Cuba also opposed the call for a boycott made by J Balvin after the 2021 Latin Grammy nominees were announced.

In a tweet, the Colombian reggaeton wrote that the Grammys do not value his genre, but that they need it.

“We give them rating, but they do not give us respect,” he published.

The former member of Calle 13 replied through a video, which he later deleted, in which he expressed that it seemed in bad taste to incite the boycott, suggesting that Balvin did so because he did not have the expected nominations; Furthermore, he also lashed out at his music.

Added to this controversy are the Chilean and Cuban, who asked the singer to communicate their concerns with respect.

“I do not agree (with the boycott),” Gepe stated briefly in an interview.

“J Balvin is one of the greatest exponents of that genre and I don’t really know what he needs, I think he has it all, apparently,” Cuba commented. “Urban music, from my point of view, I don’t know if it speaks of self-respect.

I don’t find any respect in what I hear, but I don’t know how they feel individually. Each artistic expression is valid, important; It is necessary to speak with respect, to express ourselves with that sensitivity without the intention of offending anyone or showing a super ego in things ”, he added.

The musicians are also nominated for the gala that will take place on November 18 in Las Vegas.

Already with four awards in his possession, from past editions, Cuba was considered this time in the category Best Songwriter Album, for his album Mendó.

“It’s the category I always point to, because I identify myself as a singer-songwriter.

This nomination means a lot, because it is a material that came out of a strange time, in a pandemic, in the confinement; It led me to search deep within myself, not to fear limitations.

“The album was recorded entirely by me. I played the instruments. This nomination has a greater meaning than the one it has had in previous years, ”said Alexis Puentes, real name of Cuba.

For his part, Gepe receives his first nomination, in the Best Alternative Song category, for “Confía”, a duet with Vicentico.

“I am always demanding of myself the highest percentage of effort possible and always the best results. When I do things that are forced, nothing turns out. I’ve been doing this for many years and records, so I’ve realized that if I respond to that honesty, it’s fine for me.

“If I win the award or not, I will continue to strive in the same way, seeking that honesty and seeking that this work continues to make sense to me as it has happened so far,” shared Daniel Alejandro Riveros, Gepe.

Recently, the musical couple joined talents to revert the song “Bachata Rosa”, by Juan Luis Guerra.

This will be part of the next EP, still untitled, by the Chilean, in which it will include six covers; The highlights are “Tu Pirata Soy Yo”, by Chayanne, and “Bagdad”, by Rosalía. It will be available in a few weeks.

“’Bachata Rosa’ I started working on it a few months ago. We did an intimate version, looking a bit to make a selection of what the great hits of Latin American music are for me, so we ended up making this arrangement, and I sought Álex’s help to contribute his musicality ”.
