(CNN Spanish) – “They don’t value us, but they need us. We give them ratings but they don’t give us respect ”, that was J Balvin’s harsh criticism of the Latin Grammy, hours after the nominees for the 22nd edition of the awards were announced.
In two tweets, the Colombian singer asks members of the urban genre not to attend the ceremony on November 18.
The Grammys don’t value us, but they need us. It is my opinion and nothing against the other genres because they deserve all the respect. But the trick is already boring. We give them Rating but they don’t give us respect ✊ (Pd. I’m nominated so they don’t come because I’m hurt) JOSE – J BALVIN (@JBALVIN) September 28, 2021
The comments come two years after members of the urban genre, including J Balvin, expressed a similar complaint through the hashtag #SinReggaetonNoHayLatinGrammys.
The request of the reggaeton players to the Latin Grammy 2:20
At that time, the Latin Recording Academy responded to the performers saying that the 2019 nominations resulted from a voting process by its members, also invited artists to get involved with the Academy, be active members and participate in the debates within the Academy.
Also, in 2020, the Academy included reggaeton as an official category within the awards. I also create the best rap / hip hop song category, in which they also reward trap work.
Balvin is nominated for the 22nd edition of the Latin Grammy in the song of the year categories and best urban song with “Agua” and another nomination in the category of best reggaeton performance with “Tu veneno”.
Have urban artists gotten involved with the Latin Grammys?
Latin Grammy President and CEO Manuel Abud told Zona Pop CNN in an interview this week that there are artists who have become involved with the Academy.
“There is always room for improvement. We started a process of clear inclusion by the organization. They have responded very favorably. They are much more active. I insist, there is still room for improvement, because also participating in the academic world is not easy. They have a day job, ”Abud told Zona Pop CNN.
“We are very respectful of their spaces, but we want them to always know that they have the Academy here. I am very excited to see the reaction that there has been and you see it in the results. There is still a long way to go but in general terms very well ”, added Abud.
In the top categories – Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist – there are a variety of genres and artists represented. Of the urban genre are Rauw Alejandro, Bad Bunny, C. Tangana, Maluma, Descemer Bueno, Yotuel, El Funky, Maykel Osorbo, María Becerra, Bizarrap, Boza and Paloma Mami.
