Golden Globes: will the 2022 ceremony take place?

GOLDEN GLOBES 2022. We do not yet know the date of the next edition of the Golden Globes, under fire from critics. The 2022 ceremony could however be held at the beginning of the year, before the Oscars.

[Mis à jour le 2 juin 2021 à 15h22] Will there be a 2022 edition of the Golden Globes? Nothing is less sure. Because in May 2021, the ceremony rewarding the best of American cinema and television, which often foreshadows the list of Oscars, has been the subject of fierce criticism. The Golden Globes have been accused of discrimination, sexism and lack of transparency by several stars, such as Scarlett Johansson and Tom Cruise. NBC has also announced that it will not air the 2022 awards ceremony, although Golden Globes jurors have assured that they will adopt reforms to improve representativeness.

As a result, the holding of the 2022 Golden Globes is seriously compromised by these accusations, and the date has yet to be announced. If the ceremony takes place as it has for many years, it should be held at the beginning of the year 2022, before the Oscars which are held this year in March. It is therefore possible that the Golden Globes will be held in January or February 2022. However, we will have to wait for a confirmation from the organizers to be certain.

What date for the 2022 Golden Globes?

In turmoil over the course of 2021 due to criticism over the ceremony’s lack of diversity and transparency, the date for the 2022 Golden Globes has not been announced. If it takes place as planned, it should take place before the Oscars, so before the month of March 2022. Last year, the complete list was unveiled on February 28.

We do not yet know the films in competition for the Golden Globes 2022. The 2021 edition has designated several winners in the queen categories, but it is Netflix which brought back the most trophies (ten statuettes out of 34 nominations) in a context where the cinemas were closed a good part of the year. It is however Nomadland which was crowned best dramatic film, while its director Chloé Zhao won the Golden Globe for best director. In terms of comedy films, Borat 2 received the prize, but also that of the best actor for Sacha Baron Cohen. Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer in August 2020, received the Golden Globe for Best Actor in Drama for its interpretation in Ma’s Blues Rainey. Rosamund Pike was awarded the statuette for Best Actress in a Comedy Film, while Andra Day received her counterpart in the Best Dramatic Film category.

As for the series, because the Golden Globes have the particularity of rewarding both cinema and television, it is The Crown which stands out this year. The series received awards for Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series, Best Actress in a Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress. In terms of Best comic series, Ted Lasso and Schitt Creeks stood out. The Lady’s Play was also successful with the awards for Best Miniseries and Best Actress in a Miniseries.
