A ceremony like no other

Usually organized in early January, the ceremony has been postponed by several weeks due to the global health crisis. It will be presented by the duo Amy Poelher and Tina Fey, already in charge of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 editions. Pandemic obliges, they will be installed on two different sets, one on the East Coast in New York (Tina Fey), the other in California in Los Angeles (Amy Poelher), where they will welcome the personalities who have come to present the prizes of this ceremony considered as one of the barometers of the Oscars.

Viewers will notably find Cynthia Erivo, Joaquin Phoenix, Kristen Wiig, Renee Zellweger, Margot Robbie, Christian Slater, Bryce Dallas Howard, Kevin Bacon, Sterling K. Brown, Michael Douglas, or even Catherine Zeta-Jones for the awards ceremony. The complete list of nominations can be found HERE.

The other particularity of this 78th edition of the Golden Globes lies in the increasingly important place of streaming platforms in the nominations. Traditional studios have been hit hard by the health crisis, constantly pushing back the release of films in theaters. As a result, Netflix is in pole position with 22 nominations, followed by Amazon Prime Video and its 7 nominations. Hulu and Apple TV + are also joining in the fun. While Sony, Focus and Searchlight, representatives of the old Hollywood world, have 5 nominations each.

We can also highlight the presence of three women in the “best achievement” category this year: Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Regina King (One Night In Miami), star of Watchmen, and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), who plays Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown. Some will not hesitate to point the finger at a post-MeToo effect to explain what is, in truth, a true cultural revolution since, in eight decades, only 5 women – Barbara Streisand, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay and Kathryn Bigelow – had the honor to see their name appear in this category. This is the first time that women have dominated in numbers this list completed, this year, by the names of David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin.
