On what criteria are the Oscars awarded? Members of the Academy testify

The 2020 Oscars will be rescheduled overnight from Sunday to Monday, starting at 2 a.m. KST. Who votes? How? ‘Or’ What ? But above all, on what criteria? On condition of anonymity, several members of the Academy of Cinema made revelations to the American press.

Members of the Los Angeles-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, are between 8,000 and 9,000 to vote this year for the Oscars, the most prestigious cinema prizes in the world, awarded on the night from Sunday to Monday. The result of this vote, which is taken by mail in the weeks leading up to the party, is Hollywood’s best-kept secret until the big day.

To be able to vote, you must be a member of the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences, and be sponsored by two members of the same Academy. You have to be a film professional (actor, hairdresser, costume designer, editor, producer, director, screenwriter, etc.).

About 40% of new voters this year are from a country other than the United States. The English are the most represented (23%), followed by the French (16% including several women including Mia Hansen-Love, Catherine Breillat, and Mélanie Laurent). But beyond the figures, it is the selection criteria that intrigue.

Sometimes surprising voting criteria

An actress member of the Academy granted an interview weekly The Hollywood reporter, one of the leading publications of the American film industry. On condition of anonymity, she reveals category by category, not only who she voted for, but more importantly why. And his answers, sometimes racist, sometimes unjustified, reveal above all the gloomy underside of Hollywood.

Thereby, Parasite, South Korean director Bong Joon-ho is an excellent film according to her.

“But I don’t want a foreign film to win in the best film category.

About Daughters of Doctor March, directed by Greta Gerwig, she says:

I don’t understand why they took four British actresses to play Americans.

While they are in fact two Britons, an Australian and an American-Irish woman.

For the Oscar of best director, she declares:

I want an American to win.

For the reward of best actor, she automatically eliminates Leonardo DiCaprio in Once upon a time in Hollywood, by Quentin Tarantino, because “he has already won” (!)

And for the best actress, she will not “vote for Cynthia Erivo in Harriet because :

I think they should have taken an American actress and not an English actress for this role.

As to best documentary, here too his patriotism takes over:

I did not like American Factory. When the Chinese boss says “we are better than them” and they portray American workers as fat rednecks, I wondered why Obama had associated his name with this film.

the Los Angeles Times also collected anonymous testimonies of three members of the Academy. For one of them, “no film this year comes close to the originality and quirkiness of Parasite“.

Do Academy members watch all the movies? Probably not, according to Stephen King

There is no way today to verify that the 9,000 members of the Academy have watched all the films in competition. The question is therefore to know if they are not satisfied to watch only those which attract them the most, abandoning the others.

Novelist Stephen King, himself a member of the Academy of Oscars, doubt that members of the Academy see all films in a serious way. In a Tribune published in the Washington Post about the lack of diversity at the Oscars, he writes:

“Voters have to watch all movies. This year there are about 60. It is impossible to verify, but for example, how many white members of the Academy have seen Harriet (on the activist for the cause of African Americans Harriet Tubman, editor’s note) Where The last black man in San Francisco ? “

If the older, white members of the Academy really saw all of the movies, were they moved by what they saw? Did they understand some of them?

For her part, the actress Carey mulligan, she also a member of the Academy, has a suggestion:

We should only be allowed to vote if we can prove that we have seen all the films sent by the Academy. The films left out are unmistakably brilliant.
