No Zoom or pajamas: the Oscars will take place face-to-face and in formal wear

CINEMA – No emotional thanks via Zoom, no jeans or pajamas: despite the pandemic that has upset its usual schedule, the Oscars ceremony will take place on April 25 in flesh and blood and evening dress will remain in force , just like health precautions.

The Oscars evening will be directed for the sixth time by Glenn Weiss, a recognized expert in this kind of events, with the production Steven Soderbergh, director of the film “Contagion”, announced this Friday March 19 the Academy of the arts and cinema sciences which awards prestigious cinematographic awards.

“Our plan is for the Oscars this year to look like a movie, not a TV show,” Soderbergh and the other producers said in a statement, welcoming Glenn Weiss’ ideas to make it happen.

David Rubin, the president of the Academy announced this week that the ceremony will take place not only in the traditional hall of the Dolby Theater in the heart of Hollywood, but also in a historic train station in downtown Los Angeles, a dozen miles away.

Impossible to participate virtually

The details are still unknown but the famous Union Station, renowned for its Spanish colonial-style architecture, must allow the parterre of stars to participate in the gala evening while respecting the safety distances required from the coronavirus.

A letter was also sent to all candidates advising them that they would have to be physically present if they wished to receive their trophy. It will be impossible for them to participate in the ceremony virtually, as was the case for the Golden Globes ceremony in late February, which recorded a catastrophic audience.

“We are doing our utmost to provide an enjoyable and safe evening for everyone who will be physically present, as well as for the millions of movie fans around the world, and we feel that doing this virtually would go the other way”, write the producers.

Covid-19 screening

Calling on all guests to make the trip to Union Station for “an intimate event”, they assure the stars that a Covid-19 screening test device will be deployed on site to ensure results “within the minute” .

The Oscars ceremony thus seems to be inspired by that of the Grammy Awards, successfully organized on Sunday in Los Angeles between a covered stage and an open-air awards ceremony located nearby.

The organizers, however, do not seem to have been won over by the Golden Globes and the stars who received their statuette at home, in tracksuits or pajamas. “Evening dress is very cool if you want to come, but not the casual dress,” insist the producers.

The Oscars night has been postponed for eight weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic which has caused cinemas to close and totally disrupted the schedule of major Hollywood studios.
