Minari: the movie that conquered Sundance, the Golden Globes and the Oscars

You are undoubtedly waiting impatiently, like the rest of the French, for the reopening of cinemas. We hope that this will take place on May 15, and that we will then be able to see the Minari movie in France.

Minari: the difficulties of the American dream

Minari is a variation of the famous American dream. We follow the installation of a South Korean family in a small, remote town in Arkansas.

The father wants to become a farmer and works hard to make his land fertile. Her children need to acclimatize to the lifestyle, something that will turn out to be easier than expected. But his son will also have to deal with his Korean grandmother, a fanciful old woman he did not know and who clashes with the image of the American Granny he dreams of having.

At the same time, the family will have to learn to integrate, and to fight against racism and prejudices.

The Cast of Minari

Minari was directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Korean-American director and screenwriter, to whom we owe in particular Lucky Life.

In the cast of this poetic family drama, we find faces well known to film buffs but also to fans of television series. The father of the family Jacob, is embodied by Steven yeun, the much missed Glenn from The Walking Dead.

His wife Monica is played by Ye-Ri Han, an actress known for her roles in A Quiet Dream, and Worst Woman. Grandma Soonja is camped by Youn Yuh-jung, South Korean actress seen in Sense 8 and Lucky Strike. We also find Will Patton (Armageddon, Postman) and Scott Haze (Venom).

Minari: the event of festivals, Oscars and Golden Globes

This film could have gone unnoticed, and remained an independent feature film, seen by an informed public only. But destiny decided otherwise. The film was screened in the official selection at sundance festival in the Grand Prix du Jury and the Prix du Public.

A few months later, Minari surprised the audience again. The film won the award for best foreign language film at the Golden Globes 2021 ceremony. At the Baftas, the film did not leave empty-handed with the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role obtained by Yuh-Jung Youn.

And re-belote for the 2021 Oscars ceremony. Minari has collected six nominations in prestigious categories: Best film, Best Actor for Steven Yeun (making him the first Asian-American actor to be nominated in this category), Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Yuh-Jung Youn but also Best Director for Lee Isaac Chung.

He eventually won for Best Supporting Actress.
