To complete the list of films to be nominated for the Oscars, the choice of a country’s candidate is up to that country. We suggest you read the rest of this article for more details on the subject.

Will French cinema be rewarded again?

This time, maybe the best. For nearly twenty-nine years, French cinema has dreamed of seeing its candidate win the award for the best film on the international scene. Indeed since 1992 with the nomination of the film “Indochina” at the Oscars, the prestigious award never returned to France. And the French are beginning to be patient since each year, it is candidates considered very solid who are sent by France. If you have followed them, you will agree that, ” The Prophet “, released in 2009; ” Wretched “, put on sale in 2019 or ” Of them “, are films that have not failed to impress viewers. However, they were never selected as the best achievements of the year. From then on, it started to be difficult to imagine a French film at the top. But this year, a ray of hope appears.

Three candidates selected by the CNC

Adored since its release, the film “Titanium” was completely unanimous whether in France, Canada or in the country of Uncle Sam. It is therefore no surprise that the production was selected as a palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. However, it was not yet there, its optimum. We expected a rebound, and this Tuesday, October 12, 2021, the great news has fallen, the film “Titanium” has been chosen to bring France in the running for the Oscar this year.

On October 7, the National Center for Cinema and Animated Image (CNC) submitted the candidacy of three projects: “Titanium”, directed by Julia Ducournau, as we mentioned above; “The Event”, directed by, Audrey Diwan and “ North Bac ” directed by Cédric Jimenez. Without a doubt, these three feature films amply deserved to be selected. Besides, Julia Ducournau, who won the Palme d’Or, Audrey Diwan also received an award, it is the Golden Lion which was awarded to the Venice Mistral. For its part, Cédric Jimenez’s film has largely been a hit since its release, with 1.9 million cinema admissions.

“Titanium” to represent France

But among all these, only one triumph was needed. After all, a country is only entitled to one candidate. And the choice of this is up to a skill committee. A month earlier, the Minister of Culture had appointed the members of this committee on a proposal from the president of the CNC. They were the filmmakers, Florent Zeller and Jullie Delply; producers Alain Goldman and Iris Knobloch; exporters Grégory Chambret and Émilie Georges as well as other members such as Serge Toubiana, Thierry Frémaux and Véronique Cayla. In all, nine members who must decide who to send to represent France at the 2021 Oscars.

The final choice? You guessed it from the start, this is the movie “Titanium” that was selected. And, even if it is not yet guaranteed to appear in the short list of nominees for the Oscar 2022, French cinema can afford to dream. As a reminder, last year, this prestigious distinction was awarded to director Chloé Zhao for her feature film Nomadland.
