Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Sacha Baron Cohen… The actors in the running for the 2021 Oscars

If their fame is well established for some, other competitors for this edition remain to be discovered for the general public. Back on the 10 heroes of this 93rd ceremony.

Between the postponed, canceled releases and those reserved for streaming platforms, it is difficult to navigate the films selected for the Oscars this year. If moviegoers will recognize a few names among the selected ones, Le Figaro introduces you to the ten actors – five for the main roles and five for the supporting roles – in contention Sunday evening. Place your bets.

Riz Ahmed, actor and rapper

The first Muslim in Oscar history to be selected for best actor, the 38-year-old British actor of Pakistani origin has more than one string to his bow. Rapper known as Riz Mc, his latest album The Long Goodbye, released in 2020, deals with the UK’s relations with India. The actor owes his Oscar nomination to Sound of Metal, the feature film directed by Darius Marder. A film in which he plays the character of Ruben, an artist on the margins of society who will learn that he is becoming deaf, dragging him into a heavy depression. A film also selected for the category of best film.

Chadwick Boseman, posthumously

Revealed to the public with Black panther, the critically acclaimed superhero film and the public, the actor died in August 2020, suffering from colon cancer detected in 2016. The Blues of my Rainey, a film for which he received a nomination, is thus the last film he has shot. A feature film directed by George C. Wolfe, which looks back on the story of “the mother of the blues”. Chadwick plays there a talented trumpeter and composer. Selected for the role at the 78th Golden Globes in February, the actor posthumously won the Best Actor award.

Anthony Hopkins on his way to a second Oscar

Iconic Hannibal in thesilenceofthelambs, a role which earned him a statuette in 1991, but also elegant Zorro in The Mask of Zorro (1998) or a great surgeon in Elephant man (1980) Anthony Hopkins returns with a nomination for his role in The Father, signed Florian Zeller. The indefatigable 83-year-old actor, ennobled by Queen Elisabeth II in 1993, plays in this film a lonely man, living alone in his apartment. But a stranger claiming to be her daughter’s husband is going to burst into her life. A film based on a play that had achieved immense success around the world.

Gary Oldman, mean but brilliant

Gary Oldman collects the roles of iconic villains, from his portrayal of Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK from Oliver Stone, to the corrupt cop in Leon by Luc Besson, through the terrifying Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in The fifth Element or the very ambiguous Sirius Black in Harry potter. This time it is on the “good side” in Mank by David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club) where he plays the brilliant screenwriter Herman J. Mankewicz, who will be commissioned by Orson Welles in the 1930s to write Citizen Kane.

Steven Yeun, from Korea to the United States

Criticized last year for the lack of diversity of its selections, the Academy of Oscars wanted to avoid a new public trial. As proof, Steve Yeun becomes the first American-Asian actor to be nominated in the best actor category. Born in Korea, the comedian spent his childhood in Troy, Michigan. In 2010, he played Glenn Rhee, in the series The Walking Dead, whose fate made more than one fan tremble. This is for his role in Minari, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, which Steven Yeun is today distinguished by the Oscars. He plays Jacob Yi, father of a family from Korea who wanted to settle in the 1980s in Arkansas, United States.

Five contestants for a supporting role

Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith stanfield are both vying for their roles in Judas and the Black Messiah, the story of a small criminal who agrees to collaborate with the FBI to infiltrate the Black Panther Party. Lakeith became known to the public with States of Grace in 2013, while Daniel starred in Kick-Ass 2 in 2013 and Black panther in 2018.

Facing them, Leslie Odom Jr., selected for One Night in Miami …. The film imagines a reunion between Malcolm X, Mohammed Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke, the “spiritual father” of soul, to which the 39-year-old actor lends his features.

Paul Raci, a 73-year-old Vietnam War veteran who has already appeared in several films in small roles, is meanwhile noted for his role in Sound of Metal, in which he plays Joe, the deaf mentor of the main character.

Finally, the British actor Sacha Baron Cohen is on the start line. Not for his new interpretation of Borat, the Kazakh reporter who highlights the failings of the United States, but for his role in The Chicago Seven. But for the role of Abbie Hoffmann, an American anarchist activist who found himself on the dock in 1969, accused of conspiracy.
