2021 could be the year Netflix finally wins a huge victory at the Oscars. The heavyweight in black and white Mank of David Fincher, the epic warrior Da 5 Bloods of Spike lee and the legal drama ofAaron Sorkin Chicago Seven are among the best movies. The latest fiery take on Chadwick boseman in My Rainey’s Black Bottom seems to be the best placed for the award for best actor, just like Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of a Woman, for the award for best actress.
An absolute victory could be long overdue. Over the past decade, the platform has racked up nominations by collaborating with respected writers and documentary makers. In the run-up to the 93rd Ceremony of Oscars, we take a look at the incredible films of Netflix that captured the attention of the industry, were rightly recognized, and paved the way for this year’s Oscar nominees.
Entirely shot in black and white, this epic film by David Finchertells the scriptwriter’s semi-fictional story Herman J. Mankiewicz, nicknamed Mank by his friends, who struggled to write the plot of the film which would later be one of the most cult of all time: Citizen Kane, released in 1941. This gambling and alcohol addict, embodied by Gary Oldman, is given one last chance to redeem himself. By flashbacks, Mank remembers arguments with the starlet Marion davies (Amanda Seyfried) and her lover, the press mogul William Randolph Hearst (Charles Dance) – both of which inspired the script. But it’s on his British stenographer, Rita alexander (Lily collins), which he leans on to continue working. Holed up on a ranch in the California desert, they become friends as Mank dictates his masterpiece to Rita.
