Hank Gilbert To Testify At State Department Hearing On Tar Sands Keystone Pipeline

TYLER—Hank Gilbert, the Texas Democratic Party’s nominee for Agriculture Commissioner, will give public testimony on the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for the Tar Sands Keystone Pipeline, slated to cross through a number of Texas counties. The hearing is being conducted by the U.S. State Department.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Tar Sands Keystone Pipeline would potentially have the capacity to transport 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil to destinations in Port Arthur and in Harris County. The Project would consist of approximately 1,707 miles of new, 36-inch-diameter pipeline. The Sierra Club of Texas has estimated that more than 32 streams, rivers, and lakes in Eastern Texas could be endangered by potential pollution or spillage from the pipeline. Additionally, a significant amount of private and agricultural land—including land used for farming and/or livestock grazing, will be in danger of pollution in East Texas.
